I am going to tell you what motherhood is to me. It is the greatest joy of my life and I almost missed out on this exclusive club. I dreamed of being a mother as a little girl. I was sure that all the pieces would fall into place. Go to school. Get a job. Work hard. Meet Prince Charming. Get married and have your babies all while making partner in a law firm and keeping your bikini body in shape. That was the programming that I received from my environment, media, church, school, and society. There really did not seem to be another way that would not be considered a failure by the masses with labels like old maid and childless being thrown around. When Mr. Right was not magically appearing before me, I thought about having a baby on my own, but I let the fear of what other people would think of me keep me from what would be the best decision of my life.

It took someone threatening and challenging my integrity in my professional career for me to see how courageous, brave and strong I really was. I embarked on what is now a decade-long journey of letting go. Letting go of the dream I had for myself when I was a little girl. Letting go of the past programming that told me what my life was supposed to look like. This journey of letting go has been my salvation! I am finally free because the only person’s opinion that matters to me is my own! I decided to fight for my own happiness and not let my environment or my circumstances affect my inner joy. I had beautiful twin boys six years ago and that journey was not easy. Although I felt I was often completely alone, I never gave up and fought to get my babies born. My confidante along the way was my Mom! No matter what crazy thing I dream up, she is in 100% and that is what a Mom should be!

I was reborn with my babies! I was a new person! I was now a member of that private exclusive club that previously repeatedly refused my application. It is joy, pure love, everything. I found a purpose and a belonging that I never felt before. Everything had meaning. No wonder people keep having kids. This feeling is amazing! 

Fast forward, I am on my path to creating the Happiest Law Firm in America! All of our attorneys and many of our staff are working moms. None of these moms or any of our future employees will ever have to make a choice between career and motherhood. It is time to break the old law firm model and try something new. Stay tuned and I will tell you how. 

For now, I want to wish a heartfelt Mother’s Day to my Mom, my team and all the moms who do so many amazing things everyday!  It is awe inspiring to be in your presence and I love you!
